Why Electrode Choice Matters in the Field

On an engine driven welder, the electrode is your only variable that changes
penetration, position capability and strength. Field crews rely on Stick (SMAW) for its wind
tolerance and simplicity, but each electrode class behaves differently. This guide explains the common
options and when to reach for each.

Reading the Electrode Code

In E6010 or E7018, the digits mean: E = electrode, 60/70 = minimum
tensile strength in ksi (60,000 / 70,000 psi), the third digit = welding position
(1 = all positions, 2 = flat and horizontal), and the fourth = coating type and current.
On an engine driven welder, current type (DCEP/DCEN/AC) drives your selection.

E6010 and E6011 — Fast-Freeze Cellulosic

  • Best for: Root passes on pipe, open-root work, deep penetration, dirty or rusty
    steel.
  • Polarity: DCEP (electrode positive).
  • Behavior: Forgiving, fast-freezing, strong digging arc. Ideal for vertical-down
    pipe roots.
  • Note: E6011 is the AC-capable version; E6010 is DCEP only. Great on a DC engine
    driven welder.

E7018 — Low-Hydrogen Iron Powder

  • Best for: Structural fill and cap passes, code welds (AWS D1.1), crack-sensitive
    steel.
  • Polarity: DCEP or AC.
  • Behavior: Smooth, low-spatter deposits with high strength and ductility. Requires
    dry storage (rod oven) to keep hydrogen out.
  • Note: The default structural electrode on a DC engine driven welder
    for its quality and out-of-position control.

E6013 — Rutile, All-Position General Purpose

  • Best for: Light fabrication, sheet metal, tacking, farm and general repair.
  • Polarity: AC or DC either polarity; runs smoothly on modest-output machines.
  • Behavior: Easy to strike, low penetration, neat appearance. Forgiving for
    inexperienced operators.

E7024 and E6027 — High-Deposition Iron Powder

  • Best for: Flat and horizontal production welds where deposition rate matters.
  • Behavior: Heavy coating, high deposition, easy slag removal—but only flat /
    horizontal positions. Use for thick structural fills when you can position the work.

Stainless and Hardfacing

  • E308L / E316L: Stainless steel welding and dissimilar joints.
  • Hardfacing rods: Rebuilding worn bucket lips, plow points, crusher hammers and
    frogs—deposit a wear-resistant surface over a tough base.

Matching Electrode to Machine Output

Electrode diameter sets amperage: 1/8 in (3.2 mm) runs roughly 90–130 A; 3/16 in
(4.8 mm) runs 140–200 A. Ensure the engine driven welder delivers that
current at a suitable duty cycle, and set polarity to match the electrode (most 7018 and 6010 are
DCEP).
