Step 1: Define the Job Before You Shop

  • Processes: SMAW only, or also FCAW, GMAW with a wire feeder, and DC TIG for thin or alloy work.

  • Noise and vibration: abnormal knocking, rhythmic tapping or growing vibration as the machine warms points to internal engine wear. Walk away from any machine with a distinct knock.

Step 5: Welding Output Tests

The generator half of the machine must be tested under real load, not just started:

  • Stick arc test: with fresh E7018 or E6011 electrodes, strike and hold an arc at roughly half the machine’s rated amperage for 60–90 seconds. The arc should be stable with easy starts and no stalling. Test at low (70–90 A) and high (250 A+) settings.
  • Load behavior: watch and listen as the engine takes the welding load. It should recover quickly without stumbling. Note whether the arc fades after a minute, which suggests voltage regulator or excitation problems.
