Safety Starts Before You Strike an Arc
An engine driven welder combines a running combustion engine, flammable fuel, high
welding current and hot metal—often in remote, uncontrolled locations. Safe operation means
controlling all of those hazards together. The ten rules below apply on any pipeline, farm, tower or
repair site.
1. Ventilate and Manage Fumes
Never run the engine or weld in an enclosed space without forced ventilation. Engine exhaust is a
deadly carbon-monoxide source, and welding fumes contain metal oxides. Use fans, extractors or
supplied-air respirators, and keep the engine driven welder exhaust directed away
from the operator.
2. Keep Fuel Handling Safe
- Refuel only with the engine cool and stopped—no smoking, no sparks nearby.
- Store fuel in approved containers away from the weld area.
- Wipe spills before starting; fuel vapor ignites instantly near an arc.
3. Fire Prevention and Watch
Clear combustibles within several metres, or shield them. Keep a rated extinguisher at hand and
assign a fire watch for 30–60 minutes after welding on structures with hidden voids.
4. Electrical Shock Protection
- Inspect cables and lugs daily; replace cracked or burnt leads.
- Keep the work clamp on clean, grounded metal—never on a painted or rusty surface.
- Avoid welding in wet conditions; if unavoidable, use rubber mats and dry gloves.
- Lock out the machine before servicing the welding circuit.
5. Burn and UV Protection
Welding arc UV burns skin and eyes (arc flash). Wear rated helmet, leathers, gloves and FR
clothing. Shield nearby workers with screens—an uncovered arc from an
engine driven welder can flash anyone in line of sight.
6. Engine and Moving Parts
Keep hands, tools and loose clothing away from belts, fans and rotating shafts. Guard cooling
openings; never open the radiator cap when hot.
7. Carbon Monoxide From Auxiliary Loads
If you use the generator output in a tent or vehicle, route exhaust outside. CO builds silently and
kills—treat the auxiliary side with the same respect as the engine.
8. Stability and Mounting
Secure the welder against tipping on slopes and in transit. A falling engine driven welder can crush
an operator or rupture a fuel tank.
9. Hot Metal Awareness
Workpieces stay hot long after the arc stops. Mark, cool or isolate hot parts so others do not grab
them.
10. Training and PPE
Only trained operators run the machine, and everyone on site wears eye, hand and foot protection.
