Two Machines, One Engine Concept
Both engine driven welders and generators put an engine and alternator to work. But their jobs are
different: a generator makes utility-style AC power; an engine driven welder makes
welding current and usually also AC auxiliary power. Understanding the overlap helps you
spend once on the right machine instead of twice.
What a Generator Does
- Delivers clean AC power (120/240 V) for tools, lights, pumps, electronics.
- Rated in kW (continuous and surge).
- Optimized for running many tools at once—not for welding arc control.
- Some have a welding outlet, but typically limited amperage and basic arc quality.
What an Engine Driven Welder Does
- Delivers welding current (CC for Stick/TIG, CV for FCAW/GMAW) with proper arc control.
- Also delivers auxiliary AC power, usually 5–14 kW, for tools while
or between welding. - Designed for field welding—rugged, mobile, weather-resistant.
- Total output is shared: heavy welding reduces available auxiliary capacity.
When a Generator Is Enough
- You only need to run power tools, lights, pumps, chargers—no welding.
- You already have a shop plug-in welder fed by the generator’s AC.
- Your loads are light and simultaneous; you do not need a dedicated arc.
- Best for cabins, events, backup household power, or powering a separate electric welder only.
When You Need an Engine Driven Welder
- You weld in the field, away from outlets—construction, pipeline, farms, repair crews.
- You need arc-quality Stick/TIG/FCAW with proper CC/CV control, not a basic generator weld outlet.
- You want one machine that welds and powers tools, saving truck space and weight.
- You run remote work where hauling both a generator and a welder is impractical.
When You Need Both
Some sites outgrow a single welder-generator:
- Heavy combined demand: Several welding stations plus heavy auxiliary loads exceed
one machine’s combined output. - Redundancy: A dedicated generator backs up the welder so a welding-machine fault
does not kill all power. - Specialized power: Sensitive electronics or large motor loads justify a clean
inverter generator alongside the welder.
Buying Decision Checklist
- Weld at all off-grid? Yes → engine driven welder. No → generator may
suffice. - Arc quality needs? Code or critical welds → dedicated welder. Occasional,
non-critical → generator weld outlet might do. - Single machine preferred? → welder-generator combo.
- High total power need? → welder plus separate generator.
